Fee Increase

As a result of the Office of Administrative Law's approval to amend California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Sections 1351.5 and 1352, the initial licensing fee and biennial renewal fee will increase from $790 to $805. Additionally, the reduced initial licensing fee will increase from $395 to $402.50. Following is information on the implementation of this fee increase.

Renewals: Every physician whose license expires on or after January 1, 2007 will be required to pay the new fee of $805. Delinquency and penalty charges also will be increased. Delinquency fees which presently are $79 will be increased to $80.50, and penalty fees of $395 will become $402.50. (A 10% "delinquency fee" is assessed when a physician fails to renew the license within 30 days of its expiration date, and a 50% "penalty fee" is assessed for failing to renew the license within 90 days of its expiration.) For more information, please review the frequently asked questions and answers below.

Applications: A person whose application is postmarked on or after January 1, 2007 will be assessed the new $805 initial license fee ($402.50 if eligible for the reduced fee - see the application for information).

RENEWALS

My renewal date is after January 1, 2007. However, if I pay the renewal fee on or before December 31, 2006 can I avoid having to pay the increased fee?

No. You will be required to pay the renewal fee in effect at the time of your license's expiration. Effective January 1, 2007 the renewal fee is $805; therefore, if your license expires on or after January 1, 2007 you must pay $805.

My renewal fee was due on or before December 31, 2006; however, I will be submitting my renewal payment after that date. Will I be required to pay the fee increase?

No. However, you might be charged a delinquency and/or penalty fee depending on how late you submit your renewal payment. A delinquency fee is required if you do not renew within 30 days of the date of expiration, and a penalty fee is due if you do not submit your renewal fee within 90 days of the date of expiration. Please see Business and Professions Code sections 2424 and 2429.

Is there a grace period?

No. Once your license has expired, you may not lawfully practice medicine until it has been renewed.

My license is expired. How much will I need to pay to renew my license?

The Board will need to determine the correct renewal, delinquent and penalty fees. Please call the Board's Cashiering Section at (916) 263-2637 to obtain the current amount you will need to pay to bring your license current.

Note: If your license is delinquent for five or more years, you will need to apply for licensure and meet the current licensing requirements to obtain a license.
